William Preston, a ship's master, was summoned to St Peter's with 12 of his mariners in 1467 to swear an oath...

On the 23rd of December, 1467, William Preston, master of the ship Margaret of Chester, assembled with his twelve mariners in St Peter’s church. They were there to swear on the bible before four prominent citizens and two priests of the church that the goods on his ship had not become wet because of a leak in the vessel, nor by any fault of the shipmen, but by the grace of God.
