John Norris and his son, Former sheriff and his young son

John Norris's son was well provided for - so long as he chose to follow 'good waies'...

People in medieval Chester thought about future generations just as much as they remembered their past. In 1499 the former sheriff John Norris appointed his sister Katherine Grosvenor guardian of William his son until he reached the age of 24. He stipulated that the boy was to receive five marks per year for his sustenance and schooling, but if he refused to be governed by his aunt he would have nothing. He would inherit his father’s lands only if ‘he be well gidet and take gode waies’.
